MATISSE Henri
(1869 – 1954)
French artist, engraver, sculptor.
Leader of the fauvist movement, Matisse influenced the 20th century by simplifying the style and synthesizing forms, which led to a form of expressive ease. Moreover, the color became the center of his paintings and the object of his creation. From 1943 onwards, he developed the technique of cut-out gouaches, which forced him to reinvent himself.
